House Update: January 2024

Wow my first monthly update for 2024. I genuinely feel the years are flying by. This April will mark two years of living here yet it only feels like two minutes…

This month’s focus was the upstairs office (what used to be the upstairs loo!).

We moved into this room right at the end of December, after getting our new bathroom all plumbed up.

We stripped the room all the way back, cleaned it, insulated it, framed it out, added in electrics and sorted out the old pipework from the bathroom, removing long lengths of old metal pipes, before adding in our new window!

The window is bigger than the one in the bathroom and took two days to fit. Luckily, the fitting was relatively easy, just fiddly, and done from the inside out, whereas for the last window, my Dad was having to climb the roof to fit the bathroom one!

The room was then plastered, mist coated and the radiator put in place before the skirtings were added.

Then the walls were painted in two coats of Dunelm’s Lilypad paint. I was a bit skeptical about using a Dunelm paint as I’ve found Dulux to be a great paint to work with but, after reading lots of positive reviews, I was won over and I’m so glad we bought it in the end. I originally had my heart set on Waxed Khaki which is a Dulux Heritage colour and about £50-£60 a tin but the Lilypad paint has been a great replica for a third of the price.

Then, just as we were finishing up with the room, and right at the end of January, our boiler broke!

Luckily we had an electric heater to keep us warm for a few nights while we waited for our new one to be fitted.

We knew the boiler was on its last legs, it’s been temperamental since we moved in, it was only a matter of time until it conked out.

With new windows, a rewire, new drainage, and now a new boiler too, there’s not an awful lot we haven’t yet replaced in this house! But there’s still a long way to go.

Until next time…
