House Update: September 2023

Another busy month!

September saw a lot of progress made on the upstairs bathroom thanks to my dad.

After installing the skylight in August, the room no longer felt like a storage cupboard and there’s been massive progress made ever since.

The shower tray has been set.

The supporting beam has been boxed in, insulated and plastered.

We brought our vanity unit in to see how it would all fit and to work out the height of the panelling

In the porch, I finally finished stripping the paint off the window. I worked out this took me TWO MONTHS to do. Granted, it was one day a week (Saturdays) but still… it took so long to strip this back to raw wood.

Then, once I had stripped 99% of it off, using a heat gun or paint stripper (I prefer the former but it does stink) it was time to sand and sand I did.

In fact, I’d love to know how many hours I spent sanding to get this feeling smooth and lump free! Anyway, I got there, and once it was smooth I could see where needing filling and repairing. Let’s just say I hope I never have to smell wood filler ever again!

After using the wood filler I also went around the edges of the windows with easy fill and in some instances, bonding first, because the plaster had come off where we’d taken the trim off. I don’t think I have an image of the trim before we removed it but by taking it off and repairing the wall everything looks so much neater.

You can see in the pic the quality of the old skirtings (right) vs the new ones (left)… we’re replacing these throughout the house
The framework sanded back and first layer of primer applied

While my dad plastered the bathroom, David decided to take off the plasterboard under the window framework.

He then insulated it and we replaced it with some plywood, to make it look as if the bottom third had always been originally panelling.

In our bedroom I finally got around to sorting our new bedding out as it had been stored away for ages! I have a few things left to sort in this room but this little space, with the chair in the window, is one of my favourite places in the house. I don’t sit here and enjoy it enough!
